Want to teach your students about structural racism? Prepare for a formal reprimand.

I am in Reblog heaven! Another excellent post. What is happening to education in this country? If ever we were in need of education, beyond technocracy, it would be now. It’s sad how stupid people are becoming on subjects of any real depth. How easy we want everything handed to us. How averse AND slow we are at seeking spiritual knowledge, exploring moral depths and upholding justice SMH. Ok, but I digress. Part of this tide of eroding educational standards must be laid squarely at the doors of Corpocracy and Capitalism polluting the waters.

It’s a sad and sobering day when teachers, from grade school to college, are shouting warnings that few seem willing to listen to.

The New Ramblings of D.A. Adams

This article is from Slate:

Shannon Gibney is a professor of English and African diaspora studies at Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC). When that’s your job, there are a lot of opportunities to talk about racism, imperialism, capitalism, and history. There are also a lot of opportunities to anger students who would rather not learn about racism, imperialism, capitalism, and history. I presume MCTC knows that; they have an African diaspora studies program. Back in January 2009, white students made charges of discrimination after Gibney suggested to them that fashioning a noose in the newsroom of the campus newspaper—as an editor had done the previous fall—might alienate students of color. More recently, when Gibney led a discussion on structural racism in her mass communication class, three white students filed a discrimination complaint because it made them feel uncomfortable. This time, MCTC reprimanded Gibney under their anti-discrimination policy.

CNN: The Breakdown on Obama’s Gun Violence Proposals

Happy Wednesday!!! Today goes to President Obama and VP Biden for moving with all deliberate speed to address the gun violence problem plaguing our country. Proud of the Big Dawg!

It’s a step in the right direction although MORE needs to be done IMO but that’s all I have time to say today. *Sighs* Back tomorrow to throw feet in the fray.

Here’s the video clip of the announcement.

And here’s the GOP machine continuing their campaign of fearmongering, obstruction and irrationality. Welcome to Mordor DC Style ;). *Goes away grumbling*

CNN Political Ticker

Washington (CNN) — President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced his gun violence reduction plans, including 23 steps his administration plans to take unilaterally and several legislative proposals.

He will advocate for reinstatement and strengthening the assault weapons ban, a ten-round limit for ammunition magazines, increasing access to mental health, and requiring a criminal background check on every gun sale.

UPDATED: Gun Control Victory: New York State Passes Stricter Gun Laws

I was very proud of Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week when he proposed passing the strictest gun laws in the nation. He did New York proud, moving fast and decisively, like an ol’ G , New York style. 😉

Late last night, the Senate voted to pass a series of laws that will expand the assault rifle ban, including measures to restrict gun ownership for the mentally ill. Interestingly, the Senate is controlled by Republicans but they passed it passed 43 to 18. The Assembly, which has a Democratic majority, will vote today and is expected to pass the bill without delay. Politics without partisanship. They have set the bar, in more ways than one, for the rest of the country.

UPDATED: 1/16: Naysayers be damned. The bill passed on Tuesday. Click here for NY Times article on passage of bill.

Highlights of the new legislation, courtesy of the New York Times, below. Check out the NY Times article for more information.

The expanded ban on assault weapons would broaden the definition of such weapons, banning semiautomatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military-style feature, as well as semiautomatic shotguns with one military-style feature. New Yorkers who already own such guns could keep them but would be required to register them with the state.

The most significant new proposal would require mental health professionals to report to local mental health officials when they believe that patients are likely to harm themselves or others. Law enforcement would then be authorized to confiscate any firearm owned by a dangerous patient; therapists would not be sanctioned for a failure to report such patients if they acted “in good faith.”

The legislation would extend and expand Kendra’s Law, which empowers judges to order mentally ill patients to receive outpatient treatment.

And it would require gun owners to keep weapons inaccessible in homes where a resident has been involuntarily committed, convicted of a crime or is the subject of an order of protection.

The legislative package, which Mr. Cuomo said he believed would be “the most comprehensive package in the nation,” would ban any gun magazine that can hold over 7 rounds of ammunition — the current limit is 10 rounds. It would also require background checks of ammunition buyers and automated alerts to law enforcement of high-volume purchases.

The legislation would increase penalties for multiple crimes committed with guns, would require background checks for most private gun sales, and create a statewide gun-registration database.

The Shame and The Horror…The End of Robsten (Updated 9/10)

The fur is still flying! Found this great piece by Nico Lang which I wholeheartedly agree with. Check it out.

Where does the time go? I wish to God I knew. It can’t really have been almost six weeks since I wrote a post? I hang my head in guilt and shame. Apologies to self and to followers.

The truth is that I have so much to say I have no idea where to start *Scratches head*. So many topics, so little time. The vagaries of life? Aging with reluctant grace? Foreign trips gone horridly awry? Gun violence and denial? Climate change and the hottest summer on record? Milestones which seem to be passing me by with stealthy silence? Or, *drumroll please* the utter horror I feel at Kristin Stewart and Robert Pattison’s breakup. Why? PLEASE GOD LET THEM HAVE COMPLETED FILMING FOR THE LAST TWILIGHT MOVIE .

LOL. Selfish, I know, but true. So, indulge me in seeming frivolity, while I rant about the latest celebrity breakup. I peeked at an article yesterday about Robert & Kristin’s breakup. Apparently, their three year relationship has come to an end because of Kristin’s affair with married, 41 year old, Snow White and The Huntsman movie director, Rupert Sanders. Surely, you must have heard the shock waves. There goes the end of Robsten, or so it seems.

No, you’re not impressed?

You should be. Twilight fans are all atwitter, no pun intended. Teenage girls are actually making VIDEOS of their angst that Kristin would betray Robert. THIS -> is a damn mess right here. ***Video contains profanity***  She is straight up trippin’.

Yes, I too, could not believe that people would act out in this madcap fashion. What a travesty that it went viral SMH. Shameless self-exhibition to be had, courtesy of a YouTube click.  It is indeed a sad sign of the times.

Depending on your age, your reaction was probably similar to mine, another day, another Hollywood breakup. But dig a little deeper. What does the resounding outrage and angst of American teenagers reveal? An unhealthy obsession with celebrities to say the least. To live vicariously is one thing, but this is gives new meaning to taking it over the top. I guess they believed the hype “image” of Kristen, thereby denying her humanity and God given right to SCREW UP.

There are many people to be sorry for in this story. Not the least, Liberty Ross, the gracious and beautiful wife of Rupert Sanders. Poor Robert Pattison, the cuckold, and in my opinion, Kristin Stewart. You heard right, Kristin Stewart.

Kristin is 23!! Now, while that doesn’t excuse her betrayal it should at the least make it understandable. She made a mistake. Not so unheard of at such an age and, in my opinion, she is apparently too young to be in a three year committed relationship. Some people are the exception to this rule, clearly she is not.  Star she might be but she is still young, impressionable and naive. She does not have the benefit of experience and a love untested is doomed to fail, so say I. Robert Pattison has learned the truth of this adage. Poor guy, he was apparently ready to propose.

The real culprit in this debacle is married Rupert Sanders, her senior by eighteen years. Surely, he should have known better and surely it’s a small step to conjecture that by benefit of age, wisdom and position (director) he manipulated the situation to his advantage. Any woman who has ever been a subordinate to a man with wealth and position can attest to the complicated dynamics of such a relationship. Yet, in our wonderfully sexist society it is Kristin who’s being called Trampire and being positively skewered by the press.  It is Kristin Stewart who’s labelled as a tramp, seductress, has-been, cliché. Look at this piece by Joanna Malloy of the Daily News. She says that both are to blame but spends the bulk of the article eviscerating Kristin. It’s positively hateful and is it me, or do I detect a hint of envy? What else can be construed by the following statements:

“What’s she got to be unhappy about? Not only does (did?) she have Pattison  and a boatload of money, she also has connections: Both her parents have worked  in movies all her life. She’s a Hollywood princess, born on third base. She’s  not even as beautiful as some of the young women in our newsroom.

To paraphrase the man in the classic movie “Casablanca,” I was shocked,  shocked to hear that an actress had had a fling with her director, in this case, “Snow White” director Rupert Sanders. Two weeks ago, Stewart was the envy of  aspiring actresses everywhere; now, she’s just a cliché.”

See anything wrong with that? Trash talking journalism at it’s finest. I swear my eyes were burning after I read that filth. Poisoning the minds of the public, not that it apparently takes much.

If you are justifiably outraged, why would one party bear the brunt of the blame?

Well, we know why. This behavior is expected, and more importantly, accepted, by society. Men get a pass, a slap on the wrist and so goes it. I find that flat out disgusting. He will go on making movies and she will be branded with a Scarlet Letter. That’s NOT justice.

My hope? If Robert and Kristin truly love each other they will work their way through this. If not, I hope that Kristin learns some valuable life lessons from her mistakes, there are many…

Warning – Derailment Ahead

So, y’all know I am obsessed with politics. I have no shame lol. It’s important and besides that it has become strangely…comedic.

Comedic, that is, if you don’t pull out your hair at the other end of the spectrum.

But momentarily, let us dwell on hilarity because it is always a nice place to visit. Check out this segment on Micheal Coffman from the Ed Show. He is a snake oil salesman in motion.

My God, I really did come to tears after seeing this. Is it not Un-friggin-believable? What made him think this would FLY? He released a written statement which I did not bother to read. One can write anything but when faced with truth what do you STAND for? Looking at that video, the answer is nothing good.

Prior to this, I had no familiarity with Congressman Michael Coffman. Nor, am I sure that my life has in anyway been enriched by his presence. In point of fact, I am sure it has not. I pray to God that the man serves what remains of his term and disappears into the land of ignominy that he so richly deserves.

Here’s the thing though. Doesn’t his statement sound eerily familiar? Have a gander.

Right! So there’s your primer for the lack of leadership, ineptitude, dishonesty, disgracefulness and all around spinelessness that is pervading American politics. It defies the imagination that our politicians are jumping on the bandwagon of extremist rhetoric and when called out for their idiocy do not have the grace, intelligence, or strength of character to come correct. It makes me sick, honestly.

The whole Birther movement phenomenon is disgusting to behold. It reminds me of some of the most shameful times in our history. Think Communism, Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism.Uncomfortable yet? Yes, you should be.

Many people dismiss the Tea Party as a lunatic fringe and the Birthers as a trivial “minority”. I am not one of them. After laughing at the complete ludicrousness of outlandish sound bytes, I am transfixed with skin creeping disgust. What year is THIS? Are these our choices? Why does jarringly hateful rhetoric seem to be on the rise? How on earth could so many people be fooled into thinking that these people will represent their interests in office? They cry govermental cuts and a return to personal responsibility while passing contracts to corporations and taking money from them at the expense of the people. These are the sadly regrettable facts.

Apparently, even SCOTUS is suspect. Corporations are NOT people.

When you dissect the Birther arguments, all that remains is eerie, rabid  irrationality which even in the face of FACTS, will not be silenced. Pesky little things, facts. No one can convince me that fear, racism and greed are not at it’s root.

From a political standpoint, we know unequivocally that expanding the sphere of money and power are at the root of the political shenanigans we’re seeing. I do so want to read Draper’s book, “Do Not Ask What Good We Do”this book.

But what pray tell could be driving ordinary citizens to such extreme positions? Are people really this narrow minded and stupid uniformed?

I have many theories but all too few answers and in the end it merely leaves me uneasy and ashamed. Yep, ashamed.

The next time you hear a politician begin a statement with, “I Stand By”, be very wary. Talk is getting cheaper by the second. You may not think this is the most important election of your lifetime but it is definitely in the top three. I am looking for a flashing sign that reads “Warning – Derailment Ahead”.

Veracity Unchecked: Stephen King to Mitt Romney & His Minions

This made my day lol!

Stephen King just happens to be my favorite horror maestro but I have long said that I respect him for his mind & courage. He worked hard for years and dealt with years of rejection slips before he became the GIANT he is today.

Before his well deserved fame, he and his family struggled mightily as he worked two jobs and wrote at night. They lived, like most of us, one paycheck away from being destitute. In fact, when his first book offer was made, they had to call him at his school because his home phone had been cutoff. Sadly, that was a routine occurrence.

Reading his piece in the Daily Beast, it’s clear to me that he not only has conscience but, unlike many, has not forgotten from whence he came. I always love people who become successful but do not let it change who they are at core. It’s a sad truth that fate is fickle and many hard working and talented people die penniless. Think, Van Gogh…

The only way that we will achieve tax fairness is if the GOP is voted out of office in November. Clearly, they will not see logic for all the reasons that Stephen so beautifully articulated in his piece. Truth speaks volumes.

President Obama To Announce Actions On Housing & Student Loans

Check out what President Obama’s been up to here. Color me tickled pink!

Can I say just how proud I am of President Obama? Oh boy, am I. Just think, last week, was full of memorable political milestones. From the death of Gaddafi, to the Announcement of the end of the TEN year Iraq war (cursing the warmonger GWB under my breath) to this latest turn of events that will affect the lives of millions.

Dare I say, that Obama is exercising his political muscle? What a welcome sight it is. These latest announcements move him up a notch, in my estimation, to a brilliant tactician. I can’t wait to hear the details.

The GOP must be wringing their hands and tearing out their hair as this shows them up for the obstructionist jackazzes that they are beneath the roar, rhetoric and stupidity that pollutes their entire camp. I can’t wait to see the backlash. Undoubtedly, there will be a hue and cry as to why this is a bad move but they better tread carefully as the drowning public, at large, will not appreciate their CONTINUE TO DO NOTHING BUT MESS WITH OBAMA attitude.

The soldiers are coming home and they will need something more than parades to feed their families.

Let them eat cake indeed!!!

Is it enough? Certainly not, but it’s a damn good start. 🙂
